Cooking With Children Can Be Easy

The Complete System

for

Single Portion Recipes

(Teacher Edition - Revised)

by Kathy O’Reilly

Honest! Cooking with children really can be easy and fun. This cookbook/teachers’ manual has taken all the work out of planning a cooking project with children so you can look forward to cooking as much as the children.

With single portion recipes, no one will be disappointed because they did not get to add the ingredient they wanted or did not get enough turns to stir.  Each child gets to perform every step of the recipe - “all by myself!” - to make their very own serving.

CUTS TEACHER PREPARATION TIME BY 75%!!

Why cook with children?

Cooking is one of the few activities that not only meets a basic need of providing food but also encompasses all areas of the curriculum:

Motor skills- pouring; using a beater; grating; stirring

Language- reading; increase vocabulary; nouns (egg, whisk); adjectives (large, metal); verbs (beat, grate)

Math- volume; measuring; fractions; counting; 1 to 1 correspondence

Science- chemical and physical reactions; changing states of matter; use of tools; botany

Geography/History- origins of recipes, ingredients, and tools

Art- arranging  food;  replicating  still-life paintings with food

Cooking their very own serving also builds confidence while developing concentration and lifelong skills.
